Thursday Advisement Lessons for 4SR:
The National Standards for School Counseling cover three areas for which counselors provide services: academic, career and personal/social development. In our effort to deliver a comprehensive counseling program to all students, we have devised a curriculum that is taught once a week in the study skills class. This fall we are teaching the academic component. The students are expected to know the graduation requirements, the college entrance requirements and the differences between the two sets of requirements.  Each student has each received a copy of his or her transcript and should know how to read it. Students are responsible for notifying counselors if there are problems with the transcript. The second set of lessons will be in the area of career awareness focusing on decision making and goal setting and the final lessons will cover social/emotional issues including bullying, conflict resolution.

College Corner:
One of the goals we have established for Lawndale is to create and promote a college going atmosphere.

Academic Advisement
This summer, the counselors met with every incoming 9th grade family to provide a brief orientation to Lawndale. The meetings were successful and we hope that it helped our new students feel comfortable in their new school environment.   During the course of the year, the counseling department would like to meet with every 10th grade student and a parent or guardian to work out a ‘four year plan’ for the student’s high school career. This plan can be useful in looking towards the student’s future in terms of academic, college and/or vocational plans.
Career Advisement
All students receive instruction in career development skills. We focus on decision making and goal setting. Students learn how to create resumes. Opportunities to attend job fairs for immediate employment , as well as career fairs for long term goal setting are offered yearly. Southern California Regional Occupation Center offers a wide range of vocational classes for our students after school. Internships and summer job information is available through the counseling office
Social/Emotional Advisement
Our student support personnel work very closely together and would like all students to feel comfortable in bringing issues to our attention.  Avenues for help can be found through counselors, peer mediators, administrators, school nurse, security and classified staff. Confidentiality is maintained regarding student issues and appropriate referrals will be made.
