Scholarships
So what are Scholarships?
Scholarships are often FREE money awarded to prospective and current college students by private companies (McDonalds, Coca-Cola), civic and community groups (Elks Lodge, American Legion), colleges and other groups (Hispanic Scholarship Fund, United Negro College Fund). Often students must fill out an application in order to apply for the scholarship.Scholarships sponsored by colleges are often designated for students who fit a particular profile (holding a specified grade average, enrolling in a particular major, or bringing special talent in athletics, music, and the like).
Scholarships can be based on:
¨ GPA
¨ Financial Need
¨ Community service
¨ Ethnicity/Religion
¨ Athletic ability
¨ Club involvement
¨ Essays or contests
¨ Other

1. Personal essay/statement
2. Gather letters of recommendation
3.Conduct community service, check out
4. Include an Academic Resume. Join a club/sport- take a
leadership position!
5. Get a copy of your transcript. Take AP/Honors classes!
CAUTION: Beware of scholarship scams!
¨ Be careful of receiving invitations to “seminars” that you have to pay to attend to learn about scholarships.
