the recording your demo I've already trying to put the handle on it and we're going to go about putting the face on this am I show you the way that I learned to do in college when I'm going to do is going to have layer upon layer clay I'm here to sculpt the face on the side of that this is fairly thin and it's still wet enough that's pliable what I'm doing right now cuz I'm kind of pressing in and creating areas where am I put the eyes and I'll have the tongue hanging out I'm out here so I just couldn't end any of those areas I'm going to go around and just brushing with water cuz I want to come and prepare the area ahead of time Dad The Quay on there pick up the tools I'm using as I go to do this I have my needle tool have a pencil over here a play nine a carving tool and the carbon 2010 broken off of it and I have a brush and I have a sponge in here but my water so the first thing I want to do cuz I'm going to every time roll up a chunky clay and I'm what I'm doing some making this thing too a football shape not quite but, football shape I'm just pressing it down on here you can see I still have not pressed at flat and still has some substance they're sticking on how I'm going to do is I'm going to roll up some tapered coils to go round the outside told those in place a tapered coil is a coil that is bigger in the middle can I get skinnier out towards the end look like that don't want to brush a little bit of water around here again pair this and I pick the tapered coil and later around the outside edge my deal is I'm just going to smooth out that top Edge order for a little bit of water in behind here my suite at the top Edge I want to try to avoid getting on that Inside Edge as much as possible when I roll the coil out and tapered coil out it has a nice soft Edge on it that looks natural if you get in there with a brush or your finger poking around then it looks like it's been picked at in labor do you want to be nice and soft and natural I'm just moving this out doing that together you do the same thing with the bottom tapered coil I'm just going to pull a drip of Watertown behind here and I will take the clay knife underneath here where I cannot reach I'm just going to push this together so I'm getting rid of the line that's underneath there so it's all Blended in and I'm going to take brush is stiff bristles on it and kind of work back and forth and back and forth and blend that together how do you do the sculptures I would have told all the other classes to when you're making a sculpture like this what you're doing is making what's called ones. Sure this is not anything that's going to be photo-realistic what you're doing is making abstract have a page sand sculpting on to the side of this when you're doing an abstraction you're just taking a familiar set of details and getting your own spin on it so I'm just going to give the viewer just enough information so when they look at this they look at and go out okay I get it it's a face you want them to do part of the work if you try to put a ton of details in this what will happen is most viewers will be, kind of dissatisfied with it they look at it and I'll start to nitpick at all well that doesn't look right then that's that off there doesn't know quite how it should so that's why you want to discover that fine line where you're at enough detail in there and allow the viewer to be able to do part of the work themselves out you're not doing all the work for them you said just enough detail in there so the beer will look at it and do a load of discovery same thing with the eye I'm blaming this all in together I don't want to see where that coil transitions into the body the pot this is just one method of being able to do this there are other message you guys can use and discover I just do it the way that I discovered how to uncollege so basically do what works for you and you do not have to just do a human face could do if you want to do any animal face on here I have in the past done pigs and cats things like my special Justin is do something that is very familiar to you that way you don't have to refer back to the picture constantly as you're doing something it's a lot easier or skeleton look up done skull ones in the past two can there the eyes partially now for the knows what am I do is I'm going to roll up Taylor trunk clay this is the only piece other than the handle that I'm going to slip and score on here Motorola Patrick way and then I'm going to control it so I'm making a pear shape my flat not out on the back so I'm just going to drop it flatten it out on the back I'm going to slip and score this first slip then score is very important to do it in that order otherwise you will cause an imbalance the natural order of the universe and caused the fall of the planet to the Sun very important parts of this will be fairly symmetrical I want to get down to the mouth I'm going to put that on an angle because I would like to see is a little bit of implied motion there how to make it look like he's right in the middle of sticking his tongue out at somebody so II can I capture that I'm not going to put it on here I'm going to put it on an angle so hopefully captures the moment as you go about doing these you can do whatever details you want whenever you want going to have the nose on first do it if you wanted me to put the Eyes On First whatever you'd like to do you don't have to do it any kind of certain order from time to time I'm going to go around and kind of clean everything up get rid of any crumbs on there smooth things out I'm going to add in a few little details to like right above the I fear I'm going to add some scowl lines in here cuz everything I make looks like it's angry that is displaying dinner age that I hold putting a little Chucky Clay on here and I'm going to make some lines so it looks like he's really clowning scowling but the kids like this will be what will make yours really effective check out for the nose to make the nostrils on knows what I would do is on my take this tool I'm going to shove it up in here and kind of pushover the sign that a whale make that the nostril flare out I'm just going to put right up in here and push over to the side make the nostrils and then the other end of the tool Almanac Arbor around the outside edge of the nose to put that little line on there and you got to do things like this why do people have two kind of philosophies about doing sculpture or artwork General first Flash vs I'm going to sit down I'm going to make the best piece of artwork I can no matter how long it takes I'm at work until 7 and then the other philosophy is I got 35 minutes to get this done and come back or high water it's going to be done by then no matter what it looks like I hope your philosophy is the first fly for the same kind of thing I did was a nose imma roll a chunk of clay up I'm going to make that kind of pear shape Planet out wheelbarrow backside I'm going to take the play nine and I'm going to put a line right down the center of it for the center of the tongue I want to give the viewer a little bit of texture to ponder on when I put this on here so I'm going to take the needle tool and I'm going to put a serious little dots all over this are you doing there just telling them haters and taste buds on here check it out obviously they're not taste buds because taste buds are in Denton's on your tongue but just like text Ron here that's one of those things where the look at me like I'm okay I got it I'm going to prepare the surface little bit of water stickers on and from underneath I'm just going to kind of push up hold this in place doing this bill down the nose here then I kind of glossed over a little bit when I put the nose on here and pull up the score you're not on here that being the biggest chunk of clay sometimes you can't rap air behind their moisture behind there so do a lot of moisture to escape and sorry to hear I'm just going to punch a hole up inside the nose I'm not punching through to the in side of the vessel but I'm just kind of punch it up in there that way anymore Easter that might be trapped in there for Skype more than likely probably will not blow off because when I fire this I'm going to put on top of Kiln dried out really good ahead of time and the only way things can happen but they're dried out well enough it will not explode bigger tapered coils going to be the bottom lip I'm going to take the clinic once again I'm just going to make some lines on here but these lines going to represent is dry cracked skin flatness when out personal bit of water on here I want to play the stats albertsstuff bristle bristle brush was going to Gerber that's going to blend it in really well make sure it's pushed up against there so neither side once again press in going to follow around Creed the laugh lines on there that I'm pressing on the sides here to create the sides of the cheeks and with the Clayton I freaking use another tool to carve dad and some little detail lines you can have the frown lines in above the eyes here guys not having a good day I can already tell one of my best pieces of advice to you as you guys go to do it and decorating and doing anything you do do not hesitate as you go to make some of these things if you get part way through making a wine and then you doubt yourself and stop and kind of thinking man of they do that right then it's going to look like that's what happened just always think about it first follow through and keep in mind as always you're the one who is in control and you know what you're doing if somebody looks at it and ask if you did that on purpose I did that on purpose I wanted to be that way I want to last things I'm going to do this won't be the very last thing I'll do but I'm going to add Addis Club here for the pupil of the eye are not people the eye the center of the eye brown slip here always check this before you go to apply that way you don't have a bunch of it Go raising goal over on here it's going to pull all data slip here and will die sleep here and then tomorrow what I will do is I will come in with a sharpened pencil and I'll put pupil the in slept to be almost at that letter hard consistency where if you touch it it's not going to be sticking out that you feel your fingerprints on it but you can still be able to move it around just the with your fingers so I'll take the the pencil and I'll just that the eyes tomorrow as I go to wrap this up I want to be really careful unless you're putting it inside like a box or a toe or something like that going to be sure when you put the plastic over the top of it that I'm not getting up against the slip and smearing that all over all slip is is just quite I found two more of a liquid consistency this when I've added iron to it to make it that brown color and when it's all done I'll fire out Brown and it's almost done don't that is the semi-finished face jug there I would like for all you guys to at least give it a shot Ceramics to this will be your definitive project you're going to do if you're in Ceramics one give it a shot Ceramics three you can use something like this before show please so at least make an attempt at it I'm not saying you have to make one this big but at least kind of give it a try and have fun with it
