Description
Physics is a year long, U.C. approved physical science lab course. We will be working off of the California State Standards for High School Physics. This includes, but is not limited to: motion, force, energy, momentum, gravitation, thermodynamics, light, sound, electricity, magnetism, and special relativity (if we have time). The class will be a lot of work, but if you put in the effort, it will be worth your time. Enjoy the year!

All lectures are powerpoint (found in the homework section!) and a free powerpoint viewer download can be found in the links section of my web page.

In the "Links" section of my main webpage you will also find a great website which offers a Physics tutorial, "The Physics Classroom". If you are having trouble with a concept, check it out!

We are now partnered with UCLA Engineering!  If you need extra tutoring, check out the message board at http://esc.seas.ucla.edu.  (our registration code is 5296)

This semester in Physics, we will be covering motion, forces, energy, and thermodynamics!

Introduction

I know all of you are excited to have the next two weeks off.  This is also a great opportunity for those of you who may want a couple of extra points (25 LAB points).

Assignment

You will familiarize yourself with one famous scientist.  You will research this scientist’s life and his/her contributions to his/her field of study.  Choose from the following list of (more obscure) famous physicists!

  • Willebrod Snell
  • Christiaan Huygens
  • Robert Hooke
  • Leonard Euler
  • Charles Augustin de Coulomb
  • Count Alessandro Volta
  • Thomas Young
  • André Marie Ampère
  • Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss
  • Georg Ohm
  • Michael Faraday
  • Sadi Carnot
  • Christian Doppler
  • James Prescott Joule
  • Hermann von Helmholtz
  • Lord Kelvin
  • James Clark Maxwell
  • Ernst Mach
  • Josiah Gibbs
  • Ludwig Boltzmann
  • Heinrich Hertz
  • Nikola Tesla
  • Max Planck
  • Marie Curie
  • Lise Meitner
  • Charles Francis Richter

Write a, typed, two-page report on this scientist (double-spaced, 12-point font).  I will only give credit if the report is typed.

The report must have a life history, scientific contributions, and a picture.

Happy Holidays!
