This course will function as a survey of world literature and informational texts.  Reading selections in English 9 will cover the nationally recognized Common Core Standards and will help prepare you for college, career, and future assessments.  Both semesters of this course are required in order to graduate.

PROMPT #7: To Fight or Not to Fight

In Act III, Tybalt (Juliet’s cousin) confronts Romeo and demands that they fight. Romeo doesn’t want to fight Tybalt due to his love for Juliet, but he also does not want to risk revealing their marriage. What do you think Romeo should do? Should he fight Tybalt and risk violence and injury? Or should he reveal his secret marriage to Juliet? What are some of the potential dangers or benefits of either choice?

During our reading of the poetry in this unit, we have been presented with themes on life and what it means to grow up.  In poetry collection #3, Poe used “The Bells” to take us on a journey from childhood to death.  In poetry collection #5, William Stafford wrote on themes of adolescence in “Fifteen.”  Lastly, Shakespeare introduced his “Seven Ages of Man” in poetry collection #8.  Which of these poems do you believe were the best representation of life?  Select one and write a justification paragraph that uses examples from the poem you chose to support your claim.

PROMPT #3: Literary Analysis
Select ONE of the two following quotations from I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, and use the sentence frames below to complete a written analysis in paragraph form.

Option #1: “People whose history and future were threatened each day by extinction considered that it was only by divine intervention that they were able to live at all. I find it interesting that the meanest life, the poorest existence, is attributed to God’s will, but as human beings become more affluent, as their living standard and style begin to ascend the material scale, God descends the scale of responsibility” (Angelou 120-121).
